The Deep description on Windows Services

We have tried our best efforts to explore the deepth of windows services and all the given information is gathered from Microsoft notes (As its microsoft product)

110. Service Name:-UPNPHost
Executable Name:-svchost.exe -k upnphost
Log On As:-LocalService
Description:-Provides support to host Universal Plug and Play devices.
The UPnP Host discovery service implements all of the components required for device registration, control and eventing for hosted devices. The information registered pertaining to a device (description, lifetimes, containers) are optionally persisted to disk and announced on the network after registration or on boot. The service also includes the Web server, which serves the device and service descriptions and presentation page.
When the service is stopped, bye-bye's for persisted devices are sent on the network. Running devices and device providers are shut down as well, and will not be discoverable. The first attempt to register a device will automatically start the service again. When started, this service will start the SSDP Discovery service.
Avaliable on OS:-Windows XP Home, Windows XP Professional.
Installed through:-Default operating system installation
Startup type:-Manual
Service status:-Stopped
This service depends on the following system components:-SSDP Discovery Service
The following system components depend on this service:- None
Port Numbers used:-TCP: 2869. 5000 (for event notifications)

111. Service Name:-Uploadmgr
Executable Name:-svchost.exe -k netsvcs
Log On As:-LocalSystem
Description:-The Upload Manager service manages the synchronous and asynchronous file transfers between clients and servers on the network. Driver data is anonymously uploaded from customer machines to Microsoft then used to help users find the drivers required for their systems. The Microsoft Driver Feedback Server asks the client's permission to upload the computer's hardware profile and then search the Internet for information about how to obtain the appropriate driver or get support from Microsoft or a 3rd party.
Information uploaded from your computer for the purposes of finding driver information will include the hardware identification numbers for the device, the time at which the Windows Hardware Wizard was finished, and an ID for the Windows operating system you are running. The system information uploaded cannot be tracked to a user, computer, corporation, IP address, or any other source information.
The collected data will be used to track which devices do not have easily obtainable drivers. If additional device driver information exists, it will be available after the device identification number is uploaded. If additional driver information is not available, Microsoft will record the device's identification number in order to work with hardware vendors to increase the availability of drivers necessary to run devices on Windows, or provide information about driver availability and device support.
If this service is stopped or disabled, driver data will not be uploaded to Microsoft.
Avaliable on OS:-Windows XP Home, Windows XP Professional; Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition; Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition; Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition and Windows Server 2003, Web Edition.
Installed through:-Default operating system installation
Startup type:-Manual on Windows Server 2003 Web, Standard, and Enterprise Edition. Disabled on Windows Server 2003 Datacenter Server
Service status:-Stopped
This service depends on the following system components:-Remote Procedure Call
The following system components depend on this service:- None
Port Numbers used:-TCP: 80

112. Service Name:-VDS
Executable Name:-VDS.EXE
Log On As:-LocalSystem
Description:-: The Virtual Disk Service, or VDS, provides a single interface for managing block storage virtualization whether done in OS software, RAID storage hardware subsystems, or other virtualization engines. VDS provides a vendor-neutral and technology-neutral interface for the management of logical volumes (in software) and logical units (in hardware). Management operations include operations such as binding, topology discovery and tracking, volume status and fault tracking, and performance monitoring. Virtual Disks should not be confused with snapshots. Unlike the Volume Snapshot Service, the Virtual Disk Service does not coordinate with applications or the file system. Thus, the data contained on a volume will not be synchronized prior to a volume or disk configuration operation. The Virtual Disk Service may be used to configure a mirror plex, but a snapshot provider is necessary to perform the coordination when removing the plex and surfacing the snapshot. That use is outside the scope of this document with two exceptions:
  • The Virtual Disk Service coordinates with the file system prior to extending or shrinking volumes
  • Full copy snapshots appear as a plexes to the Virtual Disk Service
If this service is stopped or Disabled, VDS services will no longer be available
Avaliable on OS:-Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition; Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition; Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition and Windows Server 2003, Web Edition.
Installed through:-Default operating system installation
Startup type:-Manula

This service depends on the following system components:-Remote Procedure Call, Plug and Play
The following system components depend on this service:-None
Port Numbers used:-None
