The Deep description on Windows Services

We have tried our best efforts to explore the deepth of windows services and all the given information is gathered from Microsoft notes (As its microsoft product)

88. Service Name:-SMTPSVC
Executable Name:-inetinfo.exe
Log On As:-LocalSystem
Description:-Transports e-mail across the network.
The SMTP service is used as an e-mail submission and relay agent. It can accept and queue e-mail for remote destinations and retry at specified intervals. Windows domain controllers use the SMTP service for Intersite e-mail-based replication. The CDO (Collaboration Data Objects) for the Windows COM component can use the SMTP Service to submit and queue outbound e-mail. Other applications such as Microsoft Exchange Server 2000 use the SMTP Service as the basis for the SMTP support.
If this service is stopped or disabled, e-mail based replication and forwarding will no longer function.
*On Windows 2000 the SMTP service was installed by default. On the Windows Server Family this service is now an optional component installed via Add/Remove Windows Components.
Avaliable on OS:-Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition; Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition; Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition and Windows Server 2003, Web Edition.
Installed through:-Default on Windows Server 2003 Web Server Edition; Add/Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components, Application Server, Internet Information Service (IIS) on Windows Server 2003 Standard, Enterprise and Datacenter Edition.
Startup type:-Automatic
Service status:-Started
This service depends on the following system components:-IIS Admin Service, Remote Procedure Call, Security Accounts Manager, Event Log
The following system components depend on this service:- None
Port Numbers used:-TCP: 25

89. Service Name:-SimpTcp
Executable Name:-tcpsvcs.exe
Log On As:-NetworkService
Description:-Implements support for the Echo, Discard, Character Generator, Daytime and Quote of the Day protocols.
Echo :(port 7, RFC 862) Echo Echoes back data from any messages it receives on this server port. Echo can be useful as a network debugging and monitoring tool.
Discard: (port 9, RFC 863) Discards all messages received on this port without response or acknowledgment. Can serve as a null port for receiving and routing TCP/IP test messages during network setup and configuration or, in some cases, can be used by programs as a message discard function.
Character Generator: (CHARGEN) (port 19, RFC 864) Sends data made up of the set of 95 printable ASCII characters. Useful as a debugging tool for testing or troubleshooting line printers.
Daytime :(port 13, RFC 867) Returns messages containing the day of the week, month, day, year, current time (in hh:mm:ss format), and time-zone information. Some programs can use the output from this service for debugging or monitoring variations in system clock time or on a different host.
Quote of the Day :(port 17, RFC 865) Returns a quotation as one or more lines of text in a message. Quotations are taken at random from the following file: systemroot\System32\Drivers\Etc\Quotes. A sample quote file is installed with the Simple TCP/IP Services. If this file is missing, the quote service fails.
Once this service is installed and started, all five protocols are enabled on all network adapters. There is no provision for selectively enabling specific services or enabling this service on per network adapter basis.
Stopping or disabling this service has no effect on the rest of the operating system. Do not install Simple TCP/IP Services unless you specifically need this computer to support communication with other systems that use these protocol services.
Avaliable on OS:-Windows XP Home, Windows XP Professional; Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition; Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition; Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition and Windows Server 2003, Web Edition.
Installed through:-Add/Remove Program, Add/Remove Windows Components, Networking Services
Startup type:-Automatic
Service status:-Started
This service depends on the following system components:-AFD Networking Support Environment
The following system components depend on this service:- None
Port Numbers used:-TCP: 7, 9, 13, 17, 19, UDP: 7, 9, 13, 17, 19

90. Service Name:-Groveler
Executable Name:-grovel.exe
Log On As:-LocalSystem
Description:-: The Single Instance Storage Groveler (SIS) service is an integral component of the Remote Installation Service (RIS). SIS reduces the overall storage required on the RIS volume. The SIS drivers contain a feature, called a groveler agent that scans the RIS volume for duplicate files. If the SIS groveler finds duplicate files, it copies the original file into the SIS and leaves a link file in its place. The link file contains information about the original file, such as its current location, size, and attributes. If an image contains duplicate files, those duplicates are copied into the store; as a result, less disk space is required on the RIS server.
SIS has two limitations. It cannot act upon any files that are referenced through junction points. SIS also cannot be used with any file system except NTFS, which is the only file system supported on RIS servers.
If this service is stopped or disabled, files will no longer be automatically linked in this manner, but the existing linked files will still be accessible. New RIS installation images will consume their full image size, and conserve little space.
Avaliable on OS:-Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition; Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition; Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition.
